Kathmandu. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol has stressed the need for coordination and cooperation among the three levels of government for disaster management and disaster risk reduction. Deputy Chief Dangol said this while addressing a monsoon-related disaster response exercise organized by the Armed Police Force Nepal 24 Gulm headquarters.
He said that the role of the local government is also important for disaster risk reduction as the local level is the closest government to the citizens during the crisis. Coordination among the federal, provincial and local governments is essential not only in policy formulation but also in disaster risk reduction and rescue.
“The local government is the government closest to the people and the government to be remembered if the locals face problems,” she said. Local governments have a very important role to play in rescuing vulnerable citizens. According to the spirit of the constitution, it is very important to cooperate and co-exist between the three levels of government and various agencies of the government. There is a need for cooperation and coordination not only in policy formulation but also in the rescue of people at risk of disaster. An example of this is today’s program. It is the need of all of us to prepare skilled manpower before the disaster-related incidents occur. The training has been imparted in coordination with Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Stout, Red Cross and Metropolitan City to ensure that there is no hearing about the lack of skilled human resources for disaster response. ’
Armed Police Force Nepal Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suresh Kumar Shrestha said nepal is a sensitive country from the point of view of natural disasters.
He stressed the need for organizing artificial exercises to enhance the efficiency of security personnel in disaster response at all local levels.
“Nepal is very sensitive from the point of view of natural disasters due to its geographical location. Nepal ranks fourth in terms of climate change and 30th most vulnerable countries in terms of floods and landslides. We have been experiencing an increase in water disasters in the Kathmandu Valley for the past few years. Due to floods and inundation, huge loss of life and property is taking place every year. This year, there will be more water than the average and there will be an increase in the incidence of disasters. ’
Stating that there has been a huge loss of life and property due to floods and inundation in the Kathmandu Valley in recent years, he stressed the need to provide necessary preparations and training to the human resources.
