Dhorpatan. coliform bacteria have been found in 106 drinking water sources in the district. The Provincial Public Health Office, Baglung, had conducted coliform tests at 285 different locations in 10 local levels of the district, including Jaimini Municipality and Kathekhola Rural Municipality.

Dilli Acharya, a laboratory technician at the Provincial Public Health Office, Baglung, informed that the highest number of coliforms were found in the drinking water of Jaimini Municipality and Kathekhola Rural Municipality. According to him, out of 47 sources tested in Kathekhola, 27 were found and out of 106 sources tested in Jaimini, 44 were found. Acharya says that if the scope of testing is expanded, coliforms may be found in more sources.

The Public Health Office is conducting coliform tests in drinking water in Nisikhola, Tamankhola, Tarakhola, Bareng, Badigad Rural Municipality, Galkot Municipality, Dhorpatan and Baglung Municipality in the district. He said that since many places have requested testing, testing will be carried out gradually at all local levels.

Acharya said, ‘When we went to many places in the district and tested drinking water sources, coliform was found. Water containing coliform is not suitable for drinking. Drinking such water causes water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, jaundice, hepatitis B, etc., which is why the Public Health Office is conducting public awareness programs.’

Jaimini Municipality Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said that the municipality has prepared a ‘Bas Plan’ and will work on cleaning and protecting the source accordingly. He said that the sources where coliforms are found will be managed and public awareness will be spread to the general public to use only purified water.

‘We are making efforts from the municipality to control coliforms, we are seeking technical assistance from other bodies, and we are making the general public aware of the effects of coliforms,’ said Deputy Chief Sharma. ‘Since coliforms have been found in many sources, water should be used only after purification, we have become serious about this.’
