Dang. An agricultural cooperative in Dang has been earning a good income from nut farming. The Balidan Agriculture Cooperative Society at Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City-4, Gogli has been providing employment to its members along with income by selling nut saplings and fruits.
The cooperative had started commercial cultivation of red lady variety of nuts three years ago by renting nine katthas of land. The cooperative’s manager, Syanu Chaudhary, said that rs 36,000 is paid annually for the land. The cooperative has so far managed to earn Rs 50,000 from the sale of nuts and Rs 200,000 by selling ripe fruits, said Chaudhary, manager of the cooperative. He said that the profit from the sale of nuts is given to the shareholders. Initially, 10 plants were produced.
According to him, 250 saplings have been planted by the cooperative. According to him, the cost of one seed is Rs 8,500. He has the experience of producing 400 saplings from each pot. Chaudhary, manager of the organization, said that the saplings are sold at the rate of Rs 100 for carrying more than five and Rs 150 for those carrying less than five.
Fruits and plants of nuts are also sold, he said. He said that all the shareholders are happy to earn income through the cooperative society. According to him, the income will increase once any income is added to the work. He said that the business will be further expanded in the coming days. Earlier, the cooperative, which had been earning through the ‘remittance’ service, had started looking for other ways of income after the agricultural cooperatives could not operate the service in the new Cooperative Act. Similarly, the cooperative had earned Rs 150,000 from the sale of rice by purchasing paddy last year. The 350-member Balidan Agriculture Cooperative has a capital of Rs 15 million.
