Agency. According to research from the University of Adelaide in Australia, climate change and human activity are making coastal lakes salty. This threatens their biodiversity and ecological functions. Coastal lakes are essential ecosystems.

Which supports fisheries. Protects the shore from storms. Fish are considered as important habitats for crustacean and migratory birds. Their productivity depends heavily on a diverse community of microorganisms that cycle nutrients and support rich biodiversity.

But rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, low rainfall, and human factors such as sea level rise, diversion of water, urban development, and groundwater depletion are pushing lakes toward hypersalinity. Chris Kennelly from the University of Adelaide said the changes would lead to the dominance of algae flowers and salt-tolerant microorganisms.

Which disrupts key processes such as carbon cycling, nutrient retention, and greenhouse gas emissions.
