Kathmandu. Nepali citizens living abroad can now open bank accounts without a national identity card. On Wednesday, the National Bank made a new arrangement to open accounts without a national identity card.

Earlier, the National Bank had made a national identity card mandatory for opening a bank account. The National Bank amended the arrangement after citizens living abroad found it difficult to open an account while making a national identity card mandatory.

Citizens who have opened an account in this way will have to produce and submit a national identity card within 35 days of returning to Nepal.

The National Bank has said in a circular, ‘In principle, arrangements should be made to open an account based on a national identity card or national identity card number.  However, Nepali citizens residing abroad, when opening an account with a licensed institution abroad through Wasi Online, can open an account without any other necessary documents other than the national identity card or national identity card number. In relation to the account opened in this way, the concerned licensed institution will have to take and update the details of the national identity card within 35 days of the account holder’s return to Nepal. In addition, disabled, helpless citizens who are unable to take care of themselves can open a bank account and transact by attaching other necessary documents other than the national identity card or national identity card number.
