The Chamber of Commerce has been honoring employees who have been doing excellent service in the customs administration every year on the occasion of Customs Day. At the honoring program, Chamber President Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal emphasized that trade should be facilitated through customs administration reforms and emphasized that illegal imports at the border should be controlled by reforming customs administration.

Chairman Agrawal said that a 10-digit harmonic code should be established after reviewing the study on all types of harmonic codes.

Chairman Agrawal said that due to the ambiguity of the harmonic code, no liability for any kind of ghost tax will be created. Chairman Agrawal emphasized that all procedures in customs offices, from registration of declaration forms to the stage of goods being inspected, should be made fast, quick and hassle-free. He said that the existing customs rates should be reduced as per the commitments made in the World Trade Organization, BIMSTEC and SAFTA etc.

Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Deepak Malhotra said that the problem is that customs valuation is higher than the actual value. Senior Vice President Malhotra said that revenue collection can be increased if the reference value is abolished in customs and the transaction value is recognized.

Finance Secretary Ghimire said that since the government and the private sector should work together for economic reform, policy-level difficulties will be eased.
