Phungling. Carpets have become the main source of income for Olangchugola village in Faktanglung Rural Municipality-7 of Taplejung. The traditional carpet production here is exported to the Chinese market with good demand.
However, due to the closure of the border due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the carpet production here could not reach China. With the opening of the border, the carpets produced in Olangchugola are now being exported to various markets in China, informed entrepreneur Phupl Lhamu Shrestha.
This has provided additional economic opportunities to the rural community here. The carpets produced in Olangchugola are also popular in the Nepali market. The carpets of this area reach Kathmandu via Phungling Bazaar. He said that the price of these carpets in the Nepali market ranges from 10,000 to 25,000 per unit.
According to entrepreneur Shrestha, the price of the same carpets in the Chinese market is very high, where they are bought and sold for 15,000 to 45,000. Due to this price difference in the international market, local producers make good profits.
The carpets exported to China have presented a great opportunity for the economic prosperity of entrepreneurs and artisans in Olangchugola. With the opening of the border, this trade network has expanded further. It has also created employment at the local level.
Export opportunities have begun to play an important role in the prosperity of the Olangchugola region.
