Kathmandu. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in Toronto on Monday that Canada would meet the target of 2 percent of NATO’s defense spending this year.

He pointed out that as the current global situation is becoming more complex and challenging, Canada needs to strengthen its security system by reducing its dependence on the United States.

“I would like to announce today that Canada will meet NATO’s goal of 2 percent of its defence spending this year, which is five years faster than scheduled,” Carney said. He added: “Threats to us are growing. The announcement came after other countries made similar announcements.

US President Donald Trump is pressuring NATO members to increase their defense spending. “This world is becoming more difficult and competitive. So Canada’s leadership is seen in both our values and strengths. ”

“America’s global leadership is changing,” he said, adding, “The United States is charging for access to its markets and reducing our security support.” “We must stop sending much of our defense spending to the United States. ”

Carney said there were new threats from Russia and China, and therefore Canada should strengthen its security forces. In April, NATO said 22 of the 32 members had met 2 percent of defence spending. European countries have increased their military spending since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and NATO has set a minimum standard of defense spending of two percent.
