CAN Federation to emphasize policy initiatives for building Digital Nepal

Kathmandu. The 2025-2027 strategic planning meeting of the Computer Association Nepal Federation (CAN Federation) has been concluded with the goal of making Nepal a global IT hub. The meeting held in Hetauda, Makawanpur on February 16 and 17 has set a two-year roadmap to strengthen Nepal’s information technology sector.

The meeting has decided to run a special program by setting the direction for policy reforms in the information technology sector. In addition, plans have been made to run various programs and initiatives to strengthen the organization.

On the occasion, President Sunaina Ghimire Pandey presented an action plan to improve the policy sector. He planned to work in various areas with the goal of making Nepal a global IT hub through reforming existing policies, developing technology, promoting research, and international cooperation for building a digital Nepal. .

Under this, policy initiatives including the Data Protection Act, e-Governance Blueprint, Ride Sharing Act, Don NP Policy, Industry 4.0, a plan to free Nepal from high cybersecurity threats, promotion of Made in Nepal software and services, standardization of ICT and establishment of IT Board, reform of Labor Act, passing of IT Bill, revision of Broadband Internet Tax will be taken forward in Nepal, Chairman Pandey mentioned.

Also, emphasis has been placed on providing up to five percent share in foreign investment (FDI), tax exemption in IT industry, programs to promote startups, and development of industry-friendly skills through finishing schools. .

Similarly, it has been committed to taking concrete steps to make the Nepali IT industry internationally competitive, to run programs through ICT for women empowerment, and to promote the digital economy.

Chairman Pandey said that work will be done to bring concrete results in collaboration with the government, private sector, educational institutions, and international bodies to build Digital Nepal. The next two-year strategy has been decided based on the plans and programs presented in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, the office bearers and working committee members submitted their suggestions to strengthen CAN in line with the changing times.

Outgoing President of CAN Federation Ranjit Kumar Podar emphasized the need for policy formulation to increase the economic contribution of the technology sector and emphasized the need to prioritize digital literacy, innovation, policy reform, and global partnerships.

Vice President of the Federation Chiranjeevi Adhikari emphasized the need for an IT-friendly policy and proposed programs such as Startup Summit, Innovation Summit, and Software Summit. Some time ago, a concept paper titled ‘Use and Practice of AI in Nepal’ was prepared under the leadership of AI Coordinator and Vice President of the Federation, Chiranjivi Adhikari, after preparing a critical study and recommendations and submitting it to the government.

Another Vice President, Subash Khadka, emphasized the need for industry-academic collaboration by involving IT students, graduates, and experts.

Vice Presidents Hark Bahadur Seti and Shekharnath Dulal mentioned the need to focus on digital literacy, awareness about cyber security, and proposal writing for IT projects at the provincial and local levels.

Vice President Srijana Shrestha focused on research, electronic (e-waste) management, and branding of the Federation. emphasized. CAN Secretary Sarita Neupane, who also conducted the program, discussed the opportunities and challenges for women in the technology sector and expressed the need for a women empowerment program through ICT.

Central Working Committee Member Keshav Bhattarai emphasized the need to formulate policies to promote quality products instead of refurbished IT equipment. Other Working Committee members also expressed their views and emphasized the need to focus on relevant policies and steps to improve production and technology.

CAN Makawanpur branch organized a reception and dinner for the office bearers and members of the Working Committee who participated in the meeting.
