Damauli. Locals have gathered collectively to continue the tradition of fishing during the Shivaratri festival in Budhuwakhola located in Bhimad Municipality-3 of Tanahun.
Here, locals have been fishing collectively during the Mahashivaratri festival for years. Local Chet Bahadur Malla informed that there was a crowd of fishermen in the river since the morning on the day of Shivaratri.
He said that the tradition of fishing in this river during Shivaratri has been going on for years and the locals have continued it. ‘Fishing is a tradition here. The locals have continued it every year. This has been a tradition since we first heard about it,’ said Malla.
Bastansingh Thakuri, who participated in the fishing activity, said that although three to four hundred people used to gather and fish in previous years, this year only about two hundred participated.
According to him, children, youth and the elderly had reached Budhuwa Khola to fish. The tradition of fishing has been going on traditionally using fishing rods, nets, and hooks.
Padam Thakuri, ward chairman of Bhimad Municipality-3, said that the practice of fishing has developed brotherhood among the locals. He said, ‘This is not only a tradition but also a means of developing mutual harmony and brotherhood.’
Although in the past years, locals used to catch fish and take them across the river, nowadays due to the use of current and pesticides, fish in Budhuwa Khola have started to decrease. Those who do not go to Shivalaya come here to fish during Shivaratri.
It is reported that locals from Ghiring Rural Municipality-4 and 5 and Bhimad Municipality-3 participated in fishing this time.
