Morang. It is reported that the construction of the new terminal building is progressing at a rapid pace in line with the work to upgrade Biratnagar Airport. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Engineer Sanjeev Khadka has informed that the physical progress of the building construction has reached 47 percent and the financial progress has reached 37 percent.
The then Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sudan Kirati, laid the foundation stone of the building under construction in Biratnagar Metropolitan City-4 on Falgun 1, 2079 BS. The target is to complete the construction of the building by Mangsir 2082 BS. It is reported that 225 workers are working in two shifts daily from 7 am to 10 pm on the construction of the new terminal building.
The Koshi/Danfe JV Construction Company has won the contract for the construction of the building at a cost of Rs 3.12 billion. The building will have a capacity of 550 passengers per hour, and will have 17 check-in counters, a very special room, a children’s play area, a special room, a press conference room, customs, immigration, customs, quarantine and shops and rooms inside the commercial building. Engineer Khadka said that the building was built based on the possibility that the number of air passengers in Biratnagar, the capital of the province, may increase in the coming days. The three-story building has four elevators and four escalators.
Yubaraj Adhikari, Information Officer of the Biratnagar Civil Aviation Authority, said that currently 2,000 passengers are taking service from the airport daily. Currently, Buddha Air is operating nine flights daily at the airport, Yeti is operating six flights daily, and Shree Airlines is operating four flights daily. Ramesh Poudel, Engineer of the construction company, said that the building was constructed using cutting-edge technology. He said that the work is being completed on time. He said that the building has been constructed to operate international flights from the airport in the coming days.
The Biratnagar Airport, built in 2025 BS with the assistance of the Government of India, covers a total area of 122 bighas. Arjun Subedi, a businessman from Biratnagar-11, has expressed confidence that if flights are launched from this area, which is a major city after Kathmandu, to New Delhi, Banaras, Kolkata and Bangladesh in India, the number of tourists in the area will increase. Some time ago, flights were launched from Biratnagar Airport to Pokhara, Bhairahawa and Himali. Similarly, Necon Air had launched flights from the airport to Kolkata in India a few years ago.
The airport office has stated that the airport collected a revenue of 175.6 million in the last fiscal year. Also, in 2024, 329,089 passengers departed from the airport and 329,949 passengers arrived. During the same period, 5,754 aircraft arrived and 5,756 aircraft took off.
