Bhojpur. Farmers of Ramprasadrai Rural Municipality-6, Baikunthe, are engaged in commercial apple farming. The local people have engaged in commercial apple farming after the ward provided a subsidy for apple farming.

Local Pandav Rai said that 36 farmers from Samke and Tamalung villages have expanded apple farming to an area of about one hundred ropanis. The farmers are enthusiastic about expanding their farming after the ward provided a subsidy for expanding apple farming.

He informed that commercial farming has been promoted with 50 percent cost sharing. Ward Chairman Ekraj Acharya said that the apple farming program has been launched in Samke and Tamalung villages as the terrain and climate are suitable for apple farming. One thousand 800 seedlings have been distributed to farmers.

‘Our goal is to make this area a model area for apples. We have been encouraging fruit cultivation including oranges and lemons in other places,’ said Ward Chairman Acharya. Earlier, the ward had established a nursery to encourage farmers engaged in commercial orange cultivation. He said that fruit seedlings including apples and oranges can be produced in Vaikunthe.

According to Dheeraj Thakur, head of the agriculture branch, technical assistance has been provided by visiting the farmers’ fields. Apple seedlings grown this year will yield production after four years. Farmers have also been trained in making organic fertilizers and pesticides to integrate them into the organic farming system. He said that he is encouraging farmers to cultivate crops suitable for the soil by testing the soil.

The rural municipality is investing in agriculture by preparing an agricultural master plan. The local market is being reached by agricultural ambulance. In addition, the municipality has determined ‘pocket’ areas for vegetables and fruits and is working accordingly. A humidity center has been constructed in Bhulke and Vaikunthe for storing agricultural produce.

The ‘One House, One Tunnel’ program has been launched in Ward No. 3 Bhulke for the development of vegetable farming.
