Kanchanpur. Khadak Bahadur Chaudhary of Beldandi Rural Municipality-3 Baiwaha has been cultivating maize in the spring for five years. He has earned an income of 30,000 to 70,000 in four months by cultivating the Varnashankar (hybrid) 1208 variety of maize.

A single maize plant planted on five acres of land usually produces three to four pods. Cultivation of high-quality Varnashankar maize yields 25 to 30 percent more than the improved variety. Farmer Chaudhary said that maize planted in the first week of Falgun can be harvested in Jestha.

Green maize is sold for 10 to 15 rupees from the farm itself. He said that the corn that is not sold green is being sold after it ripens.

Shankar Chaudhary said that the corn stalks are cut by a machine and mixed with sawdust for feeding to goats, pigs, buffaloes, etc. at home. More than 15 farmers in Baiwaha have cultivated corn in the spring on four to seven acres of land. Since the farmers here plant rice after harvesting the corn, they have been promoting corn cultivation that ripens in a short period of time.

Some farmers have cultivated 1280, some Arun-2, Arun-6 varieties of corn. ‘Last year, we earned Rs 80,000 from maize farming on five acres of land,’ said Ramlal Chaudhary. ‘We have continued maize farming this year as we have earned more than expected income in a short period of time.’

Most of the farmers who farmed maize in the spring have raised goats. Between 10 and 22 goats are raised in the farmers’ households. Farmers have taken loans from the Creative Cooperative Organization to raise goats and install borings for irrigation.

Many of the farmers who raised goats have paid off their loans by selling their goats and goats. Only the last installment of some is yet to be paid. Farmers who raise goats have been using green corn stalks along with wheat straw as fodder.

Farmers say that since corn plants are planted at a certain distance, it is easier to till, irrigate, till, and apply fertilizer. Farmers have been consulting agricultural technicians for weed management as well as disease and pest prevention. Farmers are excited to cultivate more land as they expect higher income from spring corn farming.
