Agency. Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions rose slightly in 2024, according to a federal government report. According to a report released by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, Australia produced 446.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2024.

Increased by 0.05 per cent from 446.2 million tonnes in June 2023. Emissions from industrial processes and production use were 5% lower in 2024 than in 2023, and agricultural emissions by 2% in the same period. However, in 2024, electricity emissions increased by 2.2 percent compared to 2023 and transportation emissions increased by 1.9 percent.

Australia’s total emissions in 2024 were 27 percent lower than in the year leading up to June 2005, and per capita emissions were 46.3 percent lower. Under the Paris Agreement, the federal government has committed to reducing Australia’s total emissions by at least 43 percent from 2005 levels by 2030.

Minister of Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said in response to the report that the government is on track to reach the 2030 target. Further cuts are expected as emissions from the country’s large industrial facilities fall.

For the 12 months to the end of March 2025, national emissions are initially estimated to be equivalent to 442 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, the report said. Which will be a decrease of 1.2 percent compared to the 12-month period up to March 2024.
