Kavrepalanchok. The Road Division Office, Bhaktapur has canceled the contract for the under-construction Dhulikhel-Khawa road section at Kavrepalanchok along the Araniko Highway. Today, the office informed through a public notice that the contract for the four-kilometer road, which was under expansion, has been canceled. The office’s meeting held on Tuesday had decided to cancel the contract for the road.
A company named Gauri Parbati Nirman Sewa Pvt. Ltd. had won the contract for the expansion of the road from the district headquarters Dhulikhel to Khawa on 20 Jestha 20, 2079 BS for 20 crore 19 lakh 46 thousand 5001, which was to be completed by 19 Chaitra 2080 BS. Due to the contractor company’s delay in the construction, the construction had not been completed even after 11 months of the deadline. The construction work of the road section had been stalled since last year.
After road users complained repeatedly and passengers suffered, the Infrastructure Committee of Parliament also monitored it. The office stated that the contractor company delayed the construction even after the request of the Road Division, and the last time it was asked for an explanation was on Magh 19.
According to the office, the company did not provide a satisfactory, reliable explanation even though it did not appear to be reliable. “Now, after completing the process, we will reopen the contract within a week or two, and there will also be changes based on physical and financial percentages,” said Suman Yogesh, head of the office. According to him, 25 percent financial progress has been made so far.
So far, only hill cutting has been done from Dhulikhel Bus Park to Zipline, while work on installing drains and drain walls has been done in some places, and only about one kilometer of the road from Zipline to Tal Khawa has been demolished, but cutting remains in one kilometer. Although the work of laying the base and sub-base from Dhulikhel side started last Jestha, everything was washed away in the rains and made it look like ruins.
As the construction was not completed on time, passengers of vehicles plying on this highway have been suffering a lot for the past two years. Hundreds of accidents have occurred on the road demolished for reconstruction due to the delay in the construction work. The Dhulikhel-Khawa road section, which has been deteriorating for a few years, was to be widened to 12 meters and blacktopped.
To strengthen the load-bearing capacity of the goods vehicles plying on the said road, the office had planned to lay a 20-centimeter-thick cement-mixed base on gravel for the first time in Nepal and to blacktop it in two stages, DBM and asphalt. This is the road that will reach Nepal’s northern border with China, namely Tatopani in Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha, Ramechhap, via the Araniko Highway.
