Bhojpur. The farmers of Pauwadungma have been attracted to commercial Akbare (Dalle) rasani farming. Most of the farmers here are engaged in commercial farming as they get better income from chilli cultivation as compared to other crops.
The rural municipality has made it easier for the farmers after launching necessary incentive programs for the commercial farming system. Bartendra Rai, a technician at the Agriculture Section, said that farmers are cultivating chillies in about 500 hectares of land here.
According to him, around 900 farmers here are engaged in commercial Akbari chilli cultivation. He said that farmers were attracted to chilli cultivation as they could earn good income from it.
“Most of the farmers are cultivating Akbare chillies commercially,” he said, adding, “Farmers here have expanded akbare chilli cultivation in about 500 hectares of land. ‘
Last year, around Rs 180 million was imported from the sale of chillies, he said. According to him, the target is to bring in Rs 300-350 million from chilli this year as the expansion of farming has increased.
Chief Administrative Officer Nabin Bhattarai said that the rural municipality has been encouraging the farmers by conducting various subsidy programs as akbare chillies are a source of good income for the farmers. According to him, the rural municipality has increased the expansion of farming this year as compared to last year due to the implementation of the program of necessary support.
“Akbare chilli is the main source of income for the farmers,” said Administrative Officer Bhattarai, adding, “The rural municipality is providing necessary technical support to encourage the farmers. ‘
He said the rural municipality has been providing necessary support to the farmers to connect them to income generation through agriculture. Along with the local market, the chilli produced by the local farmers reaches Dharan, Itahari, Biratnagar, Kathmandu and other cities.
Contractors have been buying the produced chillies from the farmers’ gardens. According to Dhruba Rai, a farmer of Pauwadungma-4, Bastim, a farmer fetches a minimum of Rs 150,000 to Rs 700,000 from the sale of akbari chillies.
According to him, he has expanded chillies in 20 ropanis of land as he earns good income from chillies. He said that the target is to earn Rs 800,000 to Rs 1 million from chilli this year. According to him, he earned Rs 500,000 last year from chilli cultivation, which was expanded in 12 ropanis of land.
“I am earning a good income from the sale of akbari chillies,” he said, adding, “Now I have expanded farming in 20 ropanis of land and this year I am aiming to earn Rs 8-1 million.” Rural municipality vice-chair Jyotsna Rai said that the rural municipality has been encouraging the farmers to cultivate chilli by determining the pocket area.
According to him, Akbare chilli has been established as the main source of income of the rural municipality with the necessary incentives to the farmers.
“We have laid emphasis on various farming systems by determining the pocket area,” said Rai, adding, “The return of the investment made by the rural municipality has started coming. ‘
The rural municipality is also working for the marketing of agricultural produce produced here by purchasing agricultural ambulances. Rural municipality chair Kiran Rai said that the rural municipality is investing with the goal of making the rural municipality self-reliant in agriculture.
According to him, with the rural municipality’s emphasis on farming system, crores of rupees have come in from akbari chilli cultivation alone. According to Rai, the rural municipality has distributed agricultural materials including mulching plastic worth more than Rs 7 million to 750 farmers this year to expand the area of chilli cultivation.
Rural municipality chair Rai shared that the rural municipality has introduced incentive programmes for commercial farming in all the six wards.
“We are investing in agriculture with far-reaching plans,” rai said, adding, “Akbare chilli has become the main source of income for the farmers. ‘
Commercial akbare khusrani is being cultivated in Tiwaribhanjyang of rural municipality-2, Chiangre of ward no 3, Bastim of ward no 4, Sanodumma of ward no 5 and Borodumma of ward no 6. Similarly, the rural municipality has planned to develop the geography under the ward office of Ward No. 1 Shyamshila as a pocket area for potato, cabbage and cowpea cultivation.
According to the rural municipality, the pocket area of kiwi cultivation has been determined in the upper part of Ward No. 1, Shyamshila.
