Taplejung. Passengers have been facing problems due to the recent suspension of air services at Suketar Airport in the district. Regular flights have been suspended since the last week of Mangsir after two Nepal Airlines aircraft operating at Suketar Airport developed problems.

According to the airport office, one aircraft has been damaged since Dashain and is being repaired, while the other aircraft has also been damaged since the first week of Push. Due to the suspension of air services for a long time, domestic and foreign tourists and the general public have not been able to avail services. Sita Air and Tara Air used to fly to this airport during the tourist season a few years ago, but now both have stopped their services.

The Twin Otter aircraft of Nepal Airlines used to fly regularly three days a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, before Dashain, but was flying only on Friday after Dashain. Dharmendra Khanal, a senior officer at Suketar Airport, informed that despite the official notification to resume flights from March 4 (Falgun 20), the operation could not be carried out due to the absence of aircraft. According to him, although the weather is sometimes a major challenge, this time the main problem was the aircraft breakdown.

The long-term suspension of air services has affected the tourism sector of Taplejung, while local residents have been forced to suffer for their travel. Tourists have not been able to take air services, and the general public who need to go to Kathmandu and other places for health treatment and other essential work are forced to reach Jhapa or Biratnagar airports. Locals demand that the concerned bodies immediately take necessary initiatives for the smooth movement of passengers.
