‘775 Chhaugoths demolished to end Chhaupadi practice’: Minister Sudi

Kathmandu. Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Nawalkishor Shah Sudi has said that 775 Chhaugoths have been demolished in various districts of Karnali and the Far West to end Chhaugothi. Minister Sudi said this while responding to questions raised during the discussion on the resolution proposal on decent menstruation in the National Assembly meeting on Friday.

According to him, a total of 775 Chhaugoths have been demolished, including one in Jajarkot of Karnali Province, 15 in Kalikot, 297 in Surkhet, 20 in Bajhang of the Far West Province, 69 in Kailali, 168 in Bajura and 221 in Achham. He said that efforts have been made to bring those who live in Chhaugoths and those who make them live in them under the legal ambit. He said that the program has been implemented with high priority to the campaign against violence against women and the evil practice of Chhaupadi through community-police partnership.

He also claimed that a draft guideline on decent menstruation has been prepared to end discrimination, exploitation and injustice during menstruation and build a well-off society.

He said, “A total of 775 Chhaugoths have been demolished, including one in Jajarkot, 15 in Kalikot, 297 in Surkhet, 20 in Bajhang of the Far Western Province, 69 in Kailali, 168 in Bajura and 221 in Achham.” For the implementation of the law in an integrated and coordinated manner, efforts have been made to bring those who live in chhaugoths and those who cause them to live in chhaugoths under the legal ambit for the effective implementation of the Civil Code, 2074 BS.

A program has been launched giving high priority to violence against women and the practice of chhaugothi through community-police partnership, and a joint awareness and social consultation campaign has been launched in coordination and partnership between the three levels of government to end harmful practices and traditions related to menstruation in the society. A draft guideline on dignified menstruation has been prepared to build a well-equipped society by ending discrimination, exploitation and injustice related to religion, culture, customs and practices, and any form of menstruation, he said.

He mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs has also studied the situation of chhaugothi in the current fiscal year and submitted a report, he said. He said that the laws related to menstruation will be made relevant to the times.
