Chaudhary informed that 20 species of winter migratory waterfowl have been found in Kantital and 32 species across the district. He said that the number of birds will increase further if the wetlands and other infrastructure management for waterfowl conservation are made effective. Ornithologist Ram Shahi said that the bird census was conducted to obtain detailed information and knowledge about the habitat and conservation status of waterfowl. He informed that the habitat of other wading birds, including the stilt duck and water crow, is safe in the Rapti River coastal area, Sutaiya Lake, and Kantital in Banke.

‘Waterfowl species are safe when the reservoirs they live in are clean and hygienic,’ Shahi said. ‘This year, the number of stilt duck and water crow has increased compared to the previous year because the lakes are clean.’ He informed that the birds, including the stilt duck, have returned to Nepal from Siberia and Russia. Shankar Prasad Gupta, Chief Divisional Forest Officer of the Divisional Forest Office, Banke, said that the number of waterfowl has increased by 32 species this year from the census.

He said that the number has increased with the prevention of human activities and pollution in the reservoir areas including the Rapti River and Kantital, which are the main habitats of birds. Stating that Kantital is an important wetland, he stressed that it should be developed as a bird conservation area.

Mandeep Pangeni, Information Officer of the Banke National Park, said that new and interesting birds were found in the bird census and survey conducted during this year’s winter season. He informed that a special plan will be made to keep the habitats of birds clean and safe in the areas around the Rapti River, local forests, Kantital and Sutaiya lakes to increase the number of birds in the coming year. He expressed confidence that the annual survey and census will help in determining the measures to be adopted for managing the habitats of birds. The survey and census of birds has also been completed in Bardiya. Bird conservationist Chaudhary said that the number of native birds is yet to be counted.
