Kavre. Kavrepalanchowk: The Hile Jatra, which has been traditionally celebrated in the historical and cultural city of Panauti of Kavrepalanchowk for 1421 years, has started this year as well. The jatra will formally begin from June 15 and continue till June 15.
According to tradition, the jatra is believed to have started by crossing the water by the devgans of the city (two Nyakegu) after two bamboos were planted as a symbol of the serpent in the Punyamati river. Bhadrakali’s chariot is pulled at night, gandu puja is performed and special homes are conducted.
On the day of Chaturdashi, all the deities of Panauti town are worshiped in the temple. In particular, the city is circumambulated with the khat of Maheshwar Ganesh, located on the east side of the Indreshwar Mahadev temple. In the evening, the chariot of Bhadrakali is pulled and chakra puja is performed. On the full moon day, the main attraction of the jatra – the race of three chariots and the fighting – is organized.
The chariots of Bhadrakali, Mahadev and Indreshwar are run in the market and finally the three chariots are collided with each other. According to the local tradition, this Ratha Jatra is based on the religious narrative related to the work-sports of the deity-like characters. According to the belief, Bhadrakali Devi takes the form of 64 yogini and chases Mahadev.
Mahadev goes to hide in Triveni, but when Bhadrakali does not leave, he transforms into Bhairav and follows the Goddess. In the end, Bhadrakali is surrounded from all sides and the chariot fighting is a symbol of that context. There is still a tradition of sacrificing from house to house, bringing in guests, eating chiuri and banana to welcome the local and external guests who have come to participate in the jatra.
Sowing begins the next day after the jatra is over. Panauti Municipality has also declared public holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the worship, procession of gods, pulling of chariots, Abir Jatra and cultural programs.
