Siraha. Keeping in view the rice planting, water flow has been started in the canals under the Kamala irrigation system in Dhanusha and Siraha from Monday. The canals, which were closed after the water flow in the Kamala River decreased since last Chaitra, have been re-opened.
The canals have been brought into operation on time to provide easy irrigation facilities to farmers during the main planting period, said Birendra Yadav, office chief of the Kamala Irrigation Management Office, Portaha, Dhanusha. “The canal system has been brought back into operation keeping in mind the main time of paddy sowing. The canal was temporarily closed due to low water flow in the Kamala River since last Chaitra. Now, with the required amount of water available in the river, water flow has been started in a proper manner,” he said. “We expect that with sufficient water flow in the canal, farmers will get irrigation on time.”
According to Yadav, Chief of the Irrigation Management Office, breaking the practice of operating the canal only from Shrawan 1 in previous years, water has been started flowing in the canal from the first week of Ashar for the past three years. The canal, which will be operated from Ashar, will remain operational until Kartik. Chief Yadav informed that a special Chhath festival will be held thereafter.
Irrigation facilities in twenty-five thousand hectares
The Kamala Irrigation System is one of the major irrigation schemes in Madhesh Pradesh. It is providing irrigation facilities to 25 thousand hectares of agricultural land in Dhanusha and Siraha. About 40 thousand households have benefited through this project.
About 12 thousand 500 hectares have been provided irrigation facilities through the Western Canal System of Dhanusha. These include Ganeshman Charnath, Sabaila, Shahid, Bideha, Kamala, Hanspur Municipality and Aurahi and Janakanandani Rural Municipality.
Similarly, irrigation facilities have been provided to an area of 12,500 hectares in Siraha. These include Karjanha, Mirchaiya, Kalyanpur, Siraha and Sukhipur Municipality and Bishnupur and Aurahi Rural Municipality in Siraha.
A big relief for farmers
Currently, due to the uneven monsoon rainfall, farmers are becoming more dependent on the irrigation system. In such a situation, the timely operation of the canal has brought ease to the farmers here in planting crops. Farmers are excited to get irrigation on time. There is also a growing demand to ensure regular service of their Kamala irrigation.
