Mountain. Shaligram Rock, the world’s largest rock at the confluence of Parbat, Syangja and Gulmi, has been inundated for the past one month. Shaligram Shila has been inundated due to the rise in the level of Kaligandaki River with the onset of monsoon and the surrounding structures are also at risk of collapse.
Kulraj Tiwari, patron of Shaligram Vidyaashram, said that the road leading to Shila, the nearby sattal and parikrama site have been submerged. According to him, Shaligram Shila has been inundated since the last week of May. The water level in Kaligandaki has increased rapidly due to regular rainfall.
Priests and pandits working in the area have also been displaced while devotees who come to worship and visit shaligram regularly have also been deprived of visiting Shaligram Shila. Tilak Parajuli, a local, said that the Shila Parikrama site has also been completely damaged due to the flow of Seti khola and kaligandaki high flow.
Along with the holy Shaligram rock, all the structures including sattal in Shaligram area have been inundated. The embankment and gabin mesh built for the protection of the rock have also been stopped from visiting the rock after it was buried in the water. Setibeni bazaar on the border of Parbat, Syangja and Gulmi is at risk of inundation due to floods caused by the dam of Kaligandaki ‘A’ hydropower project.
Around 200 traders and the general public in the market area of Galyang Municipality-5 of Syangja district and the market area of Galyang Municipality-5 in Syangja district are worried about the inundation of Setibeni Bazaar due to the rise in the flow of Kaligandaki and Seti rivulets. Last year, a house collapsed and half a dozen houses were displaced after the floods reached the market in July last year.
Chairman of Galyang-5, Ghanashyam Bhattarai, said the risk would remain until the kaligandaki river changes its course. He has demanded that shaligram rock should be protected by taking the flow from Gulmi side. Galyang Municipality of Syangja, Bihadi Rural Municipality of Parbat and Kaligandaki Rural Municipality of Gulmi should protect the Setiveni area by making necessary coordination, said Prabin Gurung, chairperson of Bihadi Rural Municipality.
