Agency. Eu foreign affairs chief Kaza Kallas has urged Beijing not to undermine Europe’s security in the wake of talks between China’s top diplomats in Brussels ahead of the leaders’ summit later this month.
“China is not against us, but our relations are tense on security issues,” Kallas said ahead of a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. “Chinese companies are the lifeline for Moscow to continue the war against Ukraine. Beijing conducts cyber attacks, interferes with our democracy and does unfair trade. These actions harm European security and employment. ’
Wang will travel to Brussels three weeks ahead of a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and top EU officials in Beijing. The EU has opened the door to improving relations with China at a time when US President Donald Trump has scared major trading powers by launching a tax war. But instead of reform, the trade dispute between Brussels and Beijing has intensified over China’s alleged unfair practices.
The group of 27 nations still opposes the flow of critical technology into Russia’s military through China. “Supporting war in Europe while trying to maintain close ties with Europe is a paradox that Beijing must address,” Kallas said. In an unstable world, Beijing must use its growing power to comply with international law. In an effort to pressure Beijing, the European Union (EU) has banned trade with Chinese companies accused of aiding Moscow’s war efforts. But EU officials admit they have failed to remove Beijing from the crucial strategic partnership with Moscow.
