Kathmandu. Lawmakers of the House of Representatives (HoR) have stressed the need to immediately expand the 14-km Daunne section of butwal-Narayangadh section of the East-West Highway. In today’s meeting of the Infrastructure Development Committee, the lawmakers stressed the need to complete the expansion work as soon as possible, saying that the road widening at Daunne in Nawalparasi was causing problems to the commuters due to landslides, floods and jams.

Thakur Gaire, president of the implementation monitoring and evaluation committee of the directive principles, policies and responsibilities of the state, said passengers had to travel long distances to Butwal-Palpa-Syangja-Pokhara-Tanahun-Mugling-Kathmandu due to the delay in the road expansion section. According to him, the construction companies in daunne area are facing problems while working in a way that is easier for them than the passengers.

Deputy General Secretary of The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and former minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet drew the attention of the concerned bodies to complete the under-construction bridges at the earliest.

Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist) leader and former minister Prakash Jwala stressed the need for the government to make preparations to reduce the incidents of floods, landslides and inundation in different parts of the country during the rainy season.

“The new bridge at Kalimati in Kathmandu has not been used, the old bridge is in a dilapidated condition, why has it not been used in the context of the Supreme Court concluding the process regarding the new bridge despite repeated directives from the committee?” he asked. Maina Karki stressed the need for timely completion of jajarkot section of mid-hill highway.
