Kathmandu. CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Ghanashyam Rijal has drawn the attention of the government to expand the ICU service at the National Trauma Centre in the capital. Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly on Wednesday, Rijal drew the attention of the government to expand icu services and operate MRI services at the trauma centre.
He said that according to international protocol, at least 30 percent ICU service should be available in the trauma hospital bed, but the criteria was not followed in the trauma center.
According to him, only 10 of the 200 beds in the trauma hospital are currently in operation. Stating that the manpower currently working at the trauma centre is likely to provide additional 50 ICU services, he urged the government to immediately expand the service and install MRI.
“As per the protocol of trauma hospital, ICU services should be available at 30 per cent of the hospital’s bed capacity. Although the government’s only specialized trauma centre has a capacity of 200 beds, only 10 beds have ICU services. The hospital does not even have the much-needed MRI service. According to doctors, trauma patients have to be treated within four hours. ‘
“But due to lack of ICU services, patients have to be shifted to private hospitals. In some cases, patients also die. According to the hospital administration, the existing manpower at the National Trauma Hospital can provide an additional 50 ICUs as per the protocol, so I draw the attention of the Government of Nepal to immediately expand the ICU service there and also arrange MRI service immediately,” he said.
He drew the attention of the government to end the situation where trauma patients have to go elsewhere due to lack of ICU and lose their lives prematurely.
