M/S Dongyi Minerals Pvt. Ltd. to start study for copper mining of Okharbot

Myagdi. Myagdi: A study has begun for the excavation of copper mine of Okharbot located in Malika rural municipality of Myagdi.

M/S Dongyi Minerals Pvt Ltd, a company licensed by the Department of Mines and Geology, is preparing a preliminary environmental test report in the first phase for the exploration and excavation of the copper mine.

There is a copper mine on the border of Malika Rural Municipality-3 and 4. Moti Prasad Budhathoki, ward chair of Malika rural municipality-3, said that a team of geologists will study the environmental impact of the excavation and ways to mitigate its impact.

Last week, the company held a public hearing at Okharbot to collect suggestions from residents of the affected areas. The company has also issued a seven-day public notice on Tuesday seeking suggestions from the residents and organizations of the affected areas. Locals have expressed happiness that the study for mining has been started.

He suggested taking precautions to prevent environmental and disaster-related incidents and giving priority to those affected in employment. Geologist Ronit Poudel, who came for the field study, said that copper would be discovered and researched in the mine after the approval of the preliminary environmental test report. He said that the process of excavation would be carried out in the next phase after searching the mine and conducting a feasibility study.

Bisram Patel, 72, of Malika Rural Municipality-3 said that copper was extracted using local technology till 2028 BS. Patel said the copper mines were closed at that time due to lack of technology and the need to pay taxes to the state more than the income.

Patel recalls that more than 200 workers were employed daily at the copper mine and up to seven÷8 dharnis were extracted every day. There are two sources in the copper mine. The length of these sources ranges from 250 to 500 meters. Copper wounds can still be seen here. There are tunnels of copper mines that can reach up to 200 meters.
