Dr. Poudel returns from three days in Switzerland meeting with 63 central bank governors, now focus on monetary policy

Kathmandu. Governor Dr. Bishwanath Poudel has returned home after attending the 95th Annual Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Dr. Poudel has returned home after attending the 95th Annual Meeting of the BIS held in Basel, Switzerland from June 27 to 29, 2025.

The meeting was attended by the governors of the central banks of 63 countries. Established in 1930, the BIS is an international financial institution, which currently has 63 central banks as members.

A meeting was held between Governor Dr. Poudel and Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The meeting The National Bank stated that discussions were held on further expanding the mutual relations between the central banks and on enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two central banks in the coming days, facilitating the payment system, and developing the capacity of human resources, among other aspects.

Similarly, during the meeting, Governor Dr. Poudel met with Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBC). During the meeting with the PBC Governor, discussions were held on bilateral cooperation between the two central banks, continued collaboration to make banking transactions and payment systems smooth and effective.

The program discussed the achievements and challenges faced by central banks in the cross-border payment system, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in central banks and its implications for the development of the banking system. Discussions were held on the challenges that may arise in the banking system and the policy arrangements that central banks should adopt to address them.

Also, Governor Dr. Poudel participated in an interaction program on “Regulation and Competitiveness”. At the annual meeting, BIS General Manager Augustin Carstens made the annual report public. Similarly, Professor Maurice Obstfeld presented a working paper on “The International Monetary System: A Fork in the Road”.

The meeting discussed issues such as purchasing gold for diversification of foreign exchange reserve investments and possible collaboration with Nepal Rastra Bank to increase the returns from foreign exchange reserve management by investing in new instruments available in the global market.

Also, discussions were held on the necessary collaboration for additional investment opportunities to manage foreign exchange reserves safely, profitably and effectively. Governor Dr. Poudel was accompanied by Govinda Prasad Nagila, Director of the Banking and Financial Institutions Regulation Department, and Sharan Kumar Adhikari, Director of the Governor’s Office and Secretary to the Board of Directors. was.

Established with the aim of maintaining monetary and financial stability worldwide, the organization has been playing an important role in promoting cooperation between central banks and developing the financial system and maintaining financial stability.

The meeting was attended by governors and high-ranking officials of central banks of BIS member countries and various countries of the world.

After returning from Switzerland, Governor Dr. Poudel has stated that he will focus his full attention on the upcoming monetary policy.
