Siraha. Mango production has declined in Siraha this year. According to the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Siraha, mango production in the current year has been limited to 59,866.5 metric tons. Last year, 99,235 metric tons were produced. This is a decrease of almost 40 percent compared to the previous year, the center said.
Last year, 99,235 metric tons of mango were produced in an area of nine thousand hectares. However, this year, only 8,895 hectares out of the 9 thousand 25 hectares remained productive. This year, the production has been 6.63 metric tons per hectare, which is much lower than the previous year’s 11.02 metric tons per hectare.
According to Kiran Bishwakarma, Information Officer of the Siraha Center, the main reason for the decline in mango production is the natural causes of abundant fruit one year and comparatively less fruit the next.
Similarly, he said that lack of irrigation, lack of timely necessary drug treatment, and insect infestation are also responsible for the decline in production.
After the decrease in production, the supply of mangoes in the market has decreased, which has led to a modest increase in prices. Many farmers are disappointed due to lack of income according to investment. Siraha district is known for its mango production. The decline in production has directly affected local markets, traders and fruit processing centers.
Stakeholders say that a long-term policy is needed to keep the production cycle of mango farming in mind. Lack of irrigation facilities, modern disease control technology, and farmers’ knowledge about mango production lead to instability in production every year.
Experts believe that if the government and local bodies implement policies to encourage mango production and arrange for moisture centers, it will not only boost the morale of farmers but also contribute greatly to the economic prosperity of the district.
