Kavrepalanchok. The BP Highway, which was damaged by the flood of the Roshi River in the second week of Asoj last year, has been built with various measures to prevent it from being blocked during the current rainy season. The Division Road Office, Bhaktapur, has informed that the road, which was built for traffic operation by temporarily filling it a few feet higher than before after the flood, has been constructed with ‘equipment’ and structures, taking precautions to prevent damage from the current rain.
To prevent damage from the flood, gabion mesh walls have been installed at Chowkidanda, Katunjebansi, Mangaltar and Mamti towards Kavrepalanchok, and large boulders have been kept ‘standby’ to be moved if the road is blocked, the office said. The office has kept 15/15 pieces of equipment from construction contractors, as well as seven pieces of equipment including dozers, tippers, and loaders, ready for the road section where the contract was signed to immediately remove the highway obstructions that may occur due to floods and landslides during the rainy season, said the office’s head, Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh.
The Nepal government has moved forward with the process of reconstructing the 29-kilometer road section of the BP Highway, which was damaged due to last year’s floods, in four sections. Work is to be carried out to reconstruct the damaged BP Highway in three sections in the Kavrepalanchok area and one section towards Sindhuli with the aim of completing it within two years.
According to Yogesh, the Khani/Kamaljit/Awan JV has been selected for the eight and a half km stretch from Dalabeni Si to Charsho Besi of the road to be reconstructed towards Kavrepalanchok. It is said that a contract of Rs 1.42 billion has been signed with the construction contractor to reconstruct the road section. Yogesh said that technical evaluation work is underway for the reconstruction of the 11 km road from Charsho Besi to Bhakunde Besi on the Kavrepalanchok side.
Similarly, the five and a half km road section from Barshekhola to Dalabesi on the Kavrepalanchok side is to be reconstructed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Nepal. It is stated that the 3.2 km section will be reconstructed by JICA and the 2.3 km section by the Government of Nepal. The four km section from Nepalthok to Barshekhola, which was contracted by the Khalte Division Road Office of Sindhuli, is in the contract phase.
The Government of Nepal has received a budget guarantee of Rs 8.5 billion for the damaged road. The Division Office, Bhaktapur, has stated that a budget of Rs 7.5 billion has been secured for the three sections towards Kavrepalanchok and Rs 1 billion for the road section in Sindhuli.
According to the office, the work of rebuilding the highway will not start during the current rainy season. The road to be rebuilt from Bhakundebesi to Nepal Thok will be converted from the intermediate lane to a double lane road. The construction of the BP Highway (Dhulikhel-Sindhuli-Bardibas 160 km road) was started in the fiscal year 2053/54 with the grant assistance of the Government of Japan.
The highway, which was divided into sections and completed, was formally handed over to the Government of Nepal on Asad 18, 2072 BS by the Japanese Government. The highway is considered a short route connecting the central capital Kathmandu with the mid-hills and eastern Nepal.
