Kathmandu. CPN (UML) MP Rajendra Kumar Rai has expressed objections to the provision of Personal Security Officers (PSOs).

He said this while speaking at the meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday to hold a principled discussion on the bill to amend the Nepal Police Act.

He made a sarcastic comment saying that everyone has a PSO, saying that police stations are empty and that leaders are walking around carrying PSOs. He said that everyone who wears a daura and a sarong has a PSO. He objected to the fact that police officers were also kept on duty in the homes of former and current IGPs and AIGs.

He said that the system of keeping PSOs even for retired police officers is against democracy. He stressed that they should provide good governance to the people and work in a way that the people can see.

He said, ‘I had to make a request to the Home Minister. I don’t understand what this PSO is. Everyone has it, look now. Everyone is running around with the police. The post is empty. Why did this happen? Everyone has a PSO. Whoever is wearing a sarong, has a PSO. Why does this happen? I understand that it is also kept in the homes of yesterday’s IGPs and yesterday’s AIGs. This should not be done. This is against democracy. We have to provide good governance to the people. We have to work in a way that the people can see.’

He complained that the police did not recognize the MPs even when they wore their logos.
