Kathmandu. Mobile phone chargers worth Rs 302.9 million have been brought to Nepal from India, China and Canada. The amount has been released to various countries during the period from July to June of the current fiscal year.

According to the Department of Customs, 3,942,866 mobile phone chargers have been imported in this 11-month period. Mobile phone chargers have been brought from India, China, Australia, Canada, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland and Portugal.

The Government of Nepal has earned only Rs 943.9 million by bringing these chargers to Nepal. China has the highest number of mobile phone chargers coming to Nepal. A total of 3.57 million units have been charged from the country. Rs 281 million has been sent to China to purchase the charjar. The state has collected a total revenue of Rs 86.2 million from these charges from China.

Similarly, the highest number of phone charges have come from India in a span of 11 months. A total of 372,692 such phones have been imported from India to Nepal. For this, Rs 2.17 crore has to be spent. The state has collected a total of Rs 8.09 million in revenue from such phone charges from India.

Overall, China and India have become major sources of mobile chargers. Nepal’s dependence on these two countries is high due to cheap and wide supply.

Recently, the government has been giving special priority to such industries for the manufacture of chargers in India. Pli, PMP, Make in India programmes are being run there. These programs are giving special comfort to manufacturers of chipsets, chargers, connectors.

China, which is becoming stronger in the economy, is also struggling to build electronic goods. China’s mobile charger market stood at around Rs 5.8 trillion in 2023. Which is targeted to increase it drastically by 2030.

India and China are competing fiercely to spread their electronic products around the world. In Nepal, there is not much emphasis on the production of such goods. Even the policies of the government are not paying attention to that.
