Baitadi. Farmers here are worried about the problem of American military insects in maize, which is a major food crop here. According to Hari Dutta Joshi, chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, the army worm has started destroying the maize crop in Dogadakedar and Shivnath rural municipalities.

He said that there have been complaints of pest problems in the maize crop and pesticides are being distributed. The center is already distributing a pesticide called emectin venzoate. At present, there is a shortage of pesticides in the Agricultural Knowledge Center.

Dipendra Karki of Dogadakedar-7 said the insects destroy the maize plant. He said, “The army worm has destroyed the maize crop. There seems to be a decrease in production. Due to the prolonged drought, the armyworm has become more active. Suresh Bhatta, chief of the agriculture section of Dogadakedar rural municipality, said that they hide in the maize plant throughout the day and destroy the crops in a short time by eating corn husks, stems, leaves and tops at night.

“We have advised the farmers of the areas where armyworms are seen to spray pesticides,” he said. The pest has damaged the maize pocket area itself. For the past five years, the problem of armyworms has been seen every year. Maize is cultivated in 13,000 hectares of land in Baitadi.
