Kathmandu. Kathmandu: Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission Prof Dr Shivaraj Adhikari has said that the process of upgrading Nepal’s developing countries would increase credibility and open up new opportunities for international cooperation, trade and investment. Speaking at a high-level national workshop on ‘Upgrading Nepal from least developed country: Nepal’s easy upgradation strategy challenges and future course of action’ held in Kathmandu on Thursday, Vice-Chair Adhikari stressed the need for strategic preparations for long-term and sustainable transformation including upgradation.

He said that this workshop is also a timely and important opportunity to review Nepal’s progress, evaluate the challenges ahead, and hold focused discussions and decide the necessary actions regarding Nepal’s upgradation plan. Vice President Adhikari said that Unlike the previous assessments, Nepal has also met all the three required criteria in the income criteria.

“We have made remarkable progress and now there is a need for more investment, effort, and a clear national direction, it is time to demonstrate Nepal’s potential,” adhikari said. Stating that there are still some challenges such as low productivity, weak economic diversification, slow structural transformation and vulnerability to the climate crisis, he said the goal now is not only to upgrade but also to make it easy, quality and long-term. Vice President Adhikari said that the ‘Easy Transformation Strategy’ prepared by the Government of Nepal to guide this transformation is a comprehensive framework that will help in risk management, utilization of opportunities, and coping with dilemmas.

“Nepal is now at a historic juncture, the upgradation from the least developed nation category is an important recognition of our progress, it will bring a new turn in our development journey, and validates the real progress seen in economic indices, human development, and resilience,” adhikari said. Stating that the National Planning Commission has already initiated necessary initiatives to support this change, Adhikari claimed that such efforts would help increase investment, utilize resources, and build a resilient and productive economy as it was reviewing and prioritizing development projects, strengthening the National Project Bank and moving towards the implementation of financial federalism.

He also said that the Commission is moving forward by evaluating the coordination, impact and dilemmas while implementing the 16th Plan, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and easy transformation strategy and is striving to maintain strategic relations so that the plan focuses on perfect results. The workshop, jointly organised by the National Planning Commission (NPC) and UN ISCAP, will continue for two days in Kathmandu.
