Mountain. Flood control has been controlled by constructing a canal to protect the settlements of Guntekhet and Salyan of Jaljala rural municipality-7, Dhairing of the district. The canal has been constructed to prevent damage as the risk of floods and landslides coming from above the settlement swells every year.
Rudra Lal Upadhyay, a local, said that an alternative canal has been constructed to control the flood after the flood with the old-body falling from the hill of Nathimare above the village has put the settlement of Salyan at risk. Durga Poudel, a local, said that due to the risk of floods and landslides, the compulsion to live in fear during the rainy season has ended. The rural municipality had launched the settlement protection scheme in the current fiscal year after Salyan village was at risk of floods and landslides due to budhikulo flowing through Thotneri, Dharapani and Guntekhet.
Engineer of Jaljala Rural Municipality, Sunil Baniya, said that a 350-meter-long canal has been constructed to control the flood at a cost of Rs 3.52 million allocated by the municipality. An agreement was signed with the Consumer Committee to complete the construction by mid-May. Stating that the well was constructed at Guntekhet under the Budhikulo Flood Control Scheme, he said that the construction was completed on the stipulated date.
Gangadhar Acharya, chairman of Budhikulo Flood Control Users’ Committee, said that a concrete canal has been constructed from above Guntekhet village to drain the flood into the Lungdi river. He informed that arrangements have been made for the flood with water to go to Lungdi rivulet by constructing an alternative canal for the protection of the settlement after the flood along with water in Budhikulo put the settlement of Salyan at high risk.
Last year, a landslide from Nathimare caused by floods in Budhikulo had damaged houses and agricultural land in Bhirkuna and Gaganpani of Salyan. Rudralal Upadhyay, Giridhari Poudel, Mahananda Poudel, Madhav Prasad Padhya, Narayan Prasad Padhya, Khem Raj Poudel, Durga Poudel and others were buried in the flood.
According to Jaljala-7 ward chair Tunganath Acharya, an alternative canal has been constructed from Guntekhet and dumped into lungdi rivulet after the village was at risk as the water from all over the village was deposited in Budhikulo due to the under-construction Milanchowk-Salyan-Guntekhet-Ghaykhet-Dharapani-Thotneri road project. He expressed the belief that the risk would be reduced with the construction of the well to control the flood.
