France. France’s former Prime Minister Francois Fillon has been sentenced to four years in prison for his wife’s fake job scandal. He will not have to stay in jail if he fulfills the conditions set by the court.

Fillon was convicted in 2022 of providing a fake parliamentary assistant job to his wife, Penilop Fillon. While in that position, Penilop has received millions of dollars from public funds. He was fined 375,000 euros ($433,000) and barred from running for five years. The sentence is lighter than the one awarded in 2022.

In 2022, he was sentenced to one year in jail. France’s supreme appellate court, the Court of Cassation, overturned the decision and ordered a new sentence to be heard. rss
