Sindhupalchowk. Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav has said that melamchi water would be regularly distributed to the houses of Kathmandu residents during the rainy season this year. After on-site inspection of the drinking water tank constructed at The Ribarma Rivulet in Melamchi on Monday, he said that clean drinking water would be supplied to the people of Kathmandu even during the rainy season.

“A drinking water tank constructed at Ribarma rivulet for water distribution in Kathmandu has been successfully tested. In view of the risk arising out of the onset of the rainy season, we have made arrangements to supply the water of The Rebarma River to Kathmandu through the Melamchi tunnel as an alternative measure. ’

Minister Yadav shared that the melamchi water would be provided to the people of the Valley in a seamless manner as the water from The Rebarma would be sent through the Melamchi tunnel during the rainy season. “It is expected that this arrangement will solve the problems related to drinking water of the people of the Valley in a sustainable manner,” he said. In the coming days, the people of Kathmandu will not have to suffer for water during the rainy season.

We are looking for a solution responsibly by understanding the priorities of the people. Minister Yadav said that with the testing of the water of Ribarma, it has been ensured that regular water will come to Kathmandu even during the rainy season, breaking the tradition of obstructing the distribution of Melamchi water during the rainy season.

Executive Director of Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee and engineer Ratna Prasad Lamichhane said that there is a possibility of diverting 50 million to 70 million liters daily from The Melamchi Tunnel to Ribarma in case melamchi water cannot be diverted to Kathmandu during the rainy season. “All the physical infrastructure required for this has been prepared,” he said. At present, the water available in the river has been successfully tested in Kathmandu through a tunnel. Now there will be no water shutdown in Kathmandu even during the rainy season. ’

Executive Director Lamichhane said that special attention has been paid to technology and preparedness this time keeping in mind the history of closure of Melamchi tunnel due to rain and floods in the past. Technicians, security personnel and supply teams of Melamchi Project have been deployed here round-the-clock and repair and security of the tunnel and distribution system has been strengthened in view of the risk of monsoon-related disasters including floods and landslides. Regular drinking water supply was disrupted during the rainy season after the floods of 2078 BS damaged the melamchi source.
