South Korea’s parliament passes special advisory bill to investigate Yun’s rebellion and wife’s scandal

Kathmandu. Seoul: South Korea’s parliament on Thursday approved a bill to appoint a special adviser and investigate allegations of rebellion by ousted President Yoon-sook-yeol and scandals linked to his wife Kim Kayon-hee.

Of the 198 National Assembly MPs who participated in the full session of parliament, 194 voted in favour of the bill. Three of them disagreed and one did not vote.

Under the bill, president-elect Lee Jae-myung will have to appoint an independent adviser on each of the two candidates recommended by the ruling liberal Democratic Party and the left-leaning Reconstruction Korea Party.

Under special investigation, Yun will be charged with rebellion. Who was removed from office in April after his failed martial law bid in December.

The scandals that will be investigated include stock price manipulation, obtaining luxury handbags, interfering in candidate nominations for the 2022 by-election and 2024 parliamentary elections, and allegations of rigging in opinion polls during the 2022 presidential election.
