Kathmandu. Today is World Environment Day on June 5. The day is being celebrated in different countries of the world with the theme ‘Reducing Plastic Pollution: Our Responsibility’. The day is also being celebrated in different parts of the country.
World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5 since 1973 as per the call of the United Nations. According to the United Nations, this day will be celebrated with a special program in South Korea today.
According to the United Nations, 400 million tons of plastic waste is produced on earth every year, only 10 percent of such waste is recycled and 11 million tons of plastic is discharged into rivers, lakes and oceans.
Today is also the Struggle Day against illegal fishing. The day has been celebrated since 2017 at the call of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The FAO stressed the need to end the practice of illegal fishing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs). According to the FAO, between 11 million and 26 million tonnes of fishing each year causes billions of dollars in losses.
