Agency. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung formally began his single five-year term on Wednesday after the National Election Commission confirmed his electoral victory.
Lee took office at 6:21 a.m. local time with the approval of election watchers at a plenary session. He had no transitional period since he was elected in a presidential by-election last December due to his predecessor’s failed martial law bid.
Lee of the majority liberal Democratic Party won the immediate election with 49.42 percent of the vote, defeating his main rival Kim Moon-soo of the Conservative People’s Power Party by 41.15 percent.
