Kavrepalanchowk. Panchkhal: The work on the Greater Panchkhal-Sunkoshi Drinking Water Project in Panchkhal town has reached the final stage. According to the project, 31,500 people belonging to 6,000 families will get clean drinking water from their homes by mid-May.

About 98 percent of the physical construction of the drinking water project has been completed. After the repair and reconstruction of panchkhal urban drinking water and sanitation project damaged by floods and landslides in September last year, the water treatment plant at Dandagaun of Panchkhal-9 is currently being tested by bringing water from the source of Sunkoshi river.

Kumar Lamichhane, chairman of the users’ committee, said, “Water is being stored in the overhead tank adjacent to the center with a total capacity of 3.9 million liters of water treatment and testing is currently going on in the settlements.

According to Lamichhane, water has been brought at the rate of 42 liters per second in the trial period despite the rate of 84 liters per second. Lamichhane said that water will be brought to the consumers’ homes at full capacity by the time it is sent to their homes. The consumers’ committee had foiled the plan to provide drinking water in the first phase on October 15 due to floods and landslides.

Floods and landslides submerged the source area of the project and breached the 75-metre fence wall. Distribution pipes and some structures were damaged to the tune of Rs 17 million.

The drinking water project has been designed by projecting the population of the city for 20 years. Although the project has been working at a fast pace to supply water to households by the end of March, floods and landslides have pushed the deadline for the project. Lamichhane said that the work is going on in full swing as around 200 houses are yet to be installed.

The donor agency had extended the deadline by six months due to the disaster even though the deadline expired on December 31. In the final phase, 302,400 water can be drawn every hour in the final phase and it has been proved that water can be drawn for 20 hours continuously as per the target of the project. According to the project, 6 million 48 thousand liters of water can be consumed by drawing water continuously for 20 hours.

Similarly, six wells, two water collection tanks with a capacity of 400,000 liters each, 300,000 liters of backwash overhead tank, ten new distribution tanks, six brake pressure tanks and 15 foster houses have been constructed on the banks of sunkoshi river.

Of the five generators, the construction of walls and fencing around the tank, six kilometers of water main transmission line, 35 kilometers of 37 kilometers of branch transmission lines, 220 kilometers of 220 kilometers of distribution pipelines have been completed so far.

Out of the total 6,037 taps, the installation has reached the final stage so far. The construction of consumer committee building and water treatment center has been completed. At present, 24 water pumps have been installed, seven electric transformers have been installed and the expansion of the high-tension line from the rivulet to the water collection center has been completed.

The urban drinking water and sanitation (sector-wise) project, the Town Development Fund, Panchkhal municipality and the drinking water consumers had signed an agreement to complete the project in January 2019.

A well and lifting technology have been constructed on the banks of sunkoshi river at Bhumlu rural municipality-10, Bimire for drinking water management in Panchkhal town. The project will benefit 31,415 citizens of 6,037 households of Ward No. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 of Panchkhal Municipality. Out of this, 192.05 liters of water per person will be consumed daily. It is also estimated that 45,000 citizens will be benefited by 2040.

According to the agreement, 110.5 million families have paid Rs 18,000 per family, which is five percent of the total plan, along with the budget of the donor agency and the Government of Nepal. Similarly, as per the agreement for the project, 214 consumers had taken loans from cooperatives and paid money for drinking water.
