Kathmandu. It has been 24 years since the family of former King Birendra Shah was murdered in narayanhiti royal palace. There was a banquet of the royal family at Narayanhiti Royal Palace on Friday, June 1, 2058 BS. The then King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, Prince Nirajan, Princess Shruti, Birendra’s younger brother Dhirendra, other members of the royal family Shanti, Shraddha, Jayanti and Shraddha’s husband Kumar Khadga Bikram Shah were killed on the same day.
The then Crown Prince Dipendra, who was in a semi-mutilated state, was declared king on June 15. The then Prince Gyanendra Shah was declared a ‘Naibi’ as Dipendra was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The murder has become very mysterious. Birendra’s brother Gyanendra Shah’s family was not damaged.
Gyanendra was declared king after dipendra’s death on June 1, 2058. A two-member committee comprising then Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyay and Speaker Taranath Ranabhat was directed to investigate and submit its report. Although the inquiry committee has given a report that Dipendra committed suicide by killing everyone, ordinary Nepalis have not accepted it. Former King Gyanendra, however, does not speak about the killers who killed his brother. On the contrary, some people are agitating saying that Gyanendra should be made king by elevating them.
The day is being celebrated by organizing a special program to commemorate the killing of the family of former King Birendra. On the occasion, Yogi Naraharinath Spiritual Council has organized a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of former King Birendra at Jawalakhel today.
