Kathmandu. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2082, for the first time in Nepal, ‘West Hackathon’ is going to be organized under the theme ‘Bin There Hacked That’.
The national-level programme aims to address the growing problem of waste management through technology and creativity by engaging technology experts, creative people, entrepreneurs and climate campaigners.
This special program is being organized at the assembly hall of Budhanilkantha Municipality on June 27, where the country’s talented solvers will be involved in transforming waste as an opportunity.
Organized jointly by Ncell Foundation, Khalisisi and Budhanilkantha Municipality, this hackathon is a strong example of public-private partnership between digital technology-based service providers, Nepal’s formal waste management sector and progressive local governments.
The hackathon aims to develop technology-based solutions for the empowerment of informal workers, especially women, working in waste management, recycling infrastructure, plastic pollution and waste management.
“We are delighted to support this kind of innovative initiative to connect digital innovation and environmental protection efforts on one platform. We are confident that this hackathon will develop creative and technology-based solutions for waste management, one of the most challenging problems in Nepal,” said Vishakha Laxmi Khadka, Director, Ncell Foundation and Special Project.
Nepal produces more than 3,000 tonnes of waste every day, but the formal recycling system is still developing and the participation of women in the field of waste management is less than 55.
This hackathon aims to change the current situation and promote innovative, inclusive and implementable ideas and develop a changing economy based on community and climate sustainability.
“It’s not just a hackathon, it’s a national call to reimagine waste as a source of innovation, income and impact,” said Amun Thapa, founder and CEO of Khalicisi. ‘
Applications to participate in the hackathon are open till May 15. Students, startups, engineers, designers, coders, those who have been contributing informally to waste management and all those who want to build a clean and smart Nepal can participate in it.
Competitors will have to develop solutions in four main thematic areas, from landfills to conversions, smokeless waste, women’s entrepreneurship in waste and digitized trash.
This hackathon is supported by Golyan Group, Plast Nepal Foundation, Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal, CNIYEF, Nabil Bank, Grow by Idea, Cloud Factory, FuseMachine, Model Institute of Technology, Vyapar Pathshala, Ace Institute of Management.
