Kathmandu. Us President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the UNITED States would suspend the implementation of 50 percent tariffs on its goods from June 1 to July 9 in order to get time to negotiate with the European Union (EU).
The agreement came after a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday. According to the US President, von der Leyen told Trump that he “wants to go to serious talks”.
Speaking to reporters in Morstown, New Jersey, as he prepares to return to Washington, Trump said, “I told anyone who should listen, they should do it.
Von der Leyen promised to gather immediately and see if we could do something. In a social media post on Friday, Trump threatened to impose 50 per cent tariffs on EU goods, complaining that the 27-member bloc was “too hard to deal” with trade and that negotiations were “not getting anywhere.”
These customs duties were to come into effect from June 1. But a phone conversation with von der Leyen seems to ease tensions, at least for now. “I agreed to extend it until July 9, 2025, it was my privilege to do so,” Trump told Reporters on Truth Social on Sunday evening.
“The EU and the United States share the world’s most important and close trade relationship,” von der Leyen said on his behalf, “Europe is ready to move forward quickly and decisively, to reach a good deal, we need until July 9.” ”
