‘Farmers reduce milk collection when they ask for payment’

Chitwan. Some dairy dairies in the district have warned not to pick up milk. Milk producers’ cooperatives here have issued this warning to press for payment.

Kishore Bagale, president of Chitwan District Milk Producers Cooperative Association, said, “It has become difficult to collect milk from cooperatives demanding payment now. The milk produced here is transported by the government-owned Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) and private companies.

According to him, the milk producing cooperatives in the district are yet to receive payment of more than Rs 800 million from various dairies. Out of this amount, DDC has more than Rs 350 million while the rest is from private dairies. According to Bagale, more than 40 dairies are transporting milk from the district. These dairies have reduced the transportation of milk when they ask for payment. He said, “Farmers reduce milk collection when they ask for payment. He said that some dairies have started taking a small amount of milk by deducting it from the regular milk.

Payments are yet to be made since December 15. He said that if such a situation arises, the dairy farmers will be forced to come to the movement. According to the association, 151,000 litres of milk is being exported from the district every day. Of this, 35,000 litres of milk is brought by DDC. At present, 300,000 litres of milk is produced daily in the district.

The association has urged the local administration to facilitate payment to the farmers after the delay in payment. Chief District Officer Prakash Poudel said the local administration was ready to coordinate to solve the problems of the farmers. He informed that discussions would be held by contacting the industries delaying payment. He said he would coordinate with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture in this regard.
