Kathmandu. Import of electric vehicles has increased significantly in the last 10 months of the current fiscal year. A total of 9,850 electric cars, jeeps and vans (EV vehicles) were imported into Nepal in the 10 months of the fiscal year 2081/82 BS.
This is an increase of 15.92 percent compared to the 10 months of the previous fiscal year 2080/81. In the same period of the last fiscal year, such imports were 8,497.
According to the data released by the Department of Customs, 3,369 EV vehicles up to 50 kW have entered the country till Mid-April of the current fiscal year. Similarly, 5,534 EVs ranging from 51 kW to 100 kW were imported into Nepal in the last 10 months.
Similarly, 927 EVs of 101 kW to 200 kW have entered Nepal, 18 motor peak power from 201 kW to 300 kW and two motor peak power above 300 kW have entered Nepal.
Nepali entrepreneurs have spent Rs 23.99 billion in various countries to purchase these EV vehicles and the Government of Nepal has collected Revenue of Rs 14.24 billion in 10 months through the import of these EV vehicles.
How much was imported from which country?
With the increase in EV users in Nepal, imports are also increasing steadily. Ev imports are also increasing due to the features of EV vehicles and increasing new technology.
According to the 10-month data released by the Department, the import of EV vehicles is the highest from China. Nepal has imported 7,344 EVs from China alone, including 834 EVs ranging from 101 to 200 kW, 4,597 from 51 to 100 kW, 1,900 from 50 kW, 11 from 201 to 300 kW and 2 from above 300 kW.
Similarly, India is the second largest importer of EVs. After China, Nepal has been importing the highest number of imports from neighboring country India. A total of 2,411 EVs have entered Nepal from India in the last 10 months.
Similarly, 32 EVs from Germany, four from South Korea ( Republic of Korea), six from the United States (US), 50 from Malaysia and three from Indonesia have entered Nepal.
How many EV imports increased in which year?
In the 10 months of the last fiscal year i.e. 2080/81, the import of EVs was 8,497. In the last 10 months of the last fiscal year, Nepali auto entrepreneurs had spent Rs 21.88 billion in different countries to buy such EV vehicles. The Government of Nepal had collected Revenue of Rs 9.36 billion in 10 months through the import of these EV vehicles.
Similarly, Nepal imported only 2,955 EVs from five countries in the fiscal year 2079/80 BS. Nepali entrepreneurs had spent Rs 8.41 billion in different countries for the purchase of the EV and nepal had collected Revenue of Rs 2.30 billion through it.
Similarly, 1,551 EVs had entered Nepal in the last fiscal year 2078/79 BS, from which the Government of Nepal collected revenue of Rs 1.22 billion and Nepali entrepreneurs spent Rs 4.52 billion in 10 months to purchase these EVs.
Similarly, in the 10 months of the fiscal year 2077/78 BS, a total of 153 EV vehicles entered Nepal, for which Nepal spent Rs 329.59 million and the government earned Revenue of Rs 247.598 million.
The import of EV in Nepal has increased sharply compared to the previous four years. Compared to the fiscal year 2077/78 BS, the number of EV imports has increased by 6337.90 percent in the 10 months of the current fiscal year.
Due to various features including exemption in taxes and fees, cheap and clean energy sources, financial access and pollution control, the attraction of entrepreneurs is increasing towards EV vehicles.
According to the entrepreneurs, 15 percent customs duty, 10 percent excise duty and value addition on 50 to 100 kW of EVs, 20 percent customs duty on 100 to 200 kW, 20 percent excise duty and vat on 100 to 200 kW are also increasing due to the government’s simple, easy and cheap tax.
But recently, the downpayment of EV vehicles was increased from 20 percent to 40 percent.
