‘Policy and structural reforms needed to mitigate monsoon damage’

Kathmandu. A total of 8,441 monsoon-related incidents have occurred in Nepal in the last 10 years.

Executive Chief Engineer of The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority Dinesh Prasad Bhatta informed this while speaking at a meeting of the Federalism Empowerment and National Concern Committee held on Thursday.

In the last 10 years, 1,602 incidents of floods have been reported due to monsoon-related disasters. Similarly, 2,840 landslides, 1,597 heavy rainfall and lightning incidents have also increased. Stating that there have been 2,400 incidents of lightning in the last 10 years, he claimed that this year there will be more rain than last year and hotter than the average.

This year is expected to be more harassed than last year and preparations are being made accordingly, he said. Policy and structural reforms are necessary to minimize monsoon damage, he added.

Stating that all the works could not be done by the union, he said that the local level should be given its responsibility. It is also necessary to develop the capacity of the local level, he added.

“In the last 10 years, there have been many incidents of floods, landslides, heavy rains and lightning. He argued that disaster management could not be completed unless the society could be made responsible.
