Lamjung. Rainaskot, located in Rainas Municipality-9 of Eastern Lamjung, has become a center of attraction for domestic and foreign tourists lately. With the reconstruction of Gurunggaun of Rainaskot, which was damaged by the earthquake in 2072 BS, domestic and foreign tourists have started flocking lately.
More than a dozen glaciers including Annapurna, Ganesh, Manaslu, Lamjung, Machhapuchhre, which are seen from Rainaskot, located just above the Rainas Homestay, attract the hearts of tourists.
Dr Jyoti Prasad Gajurel, who reached Rainaskot in Lamjung from Kathmandu, said he was delighted to see the hospitality and visit to the historic place, Rainaskot. According to him, domestic and foreign tourists have started increasing in recent times due to the climate and beautiful and scenic views here.
Barpak, Laprak, Bhachchek, Palungtar, Sirankot, Gorkhabazar, Anbukhairni, Dumrebazar, Bandipur and Damauli villages of Gorkha can be easily seen from this hill. Most parts of Besisahar, Bhotewadar, Sundarbazar, Bhorletar, Duradanda and PurviLamjung, the district headquarters of Lamjung, can also be seen in front of the eyes from this hill. According to locals, 18 districts can be seen from this place.
Along with the sunrise and sunset seen from here, the mountains, areas along the banks of chepe and Marsyangdi rivers, as well as the historic Rainaskot Fort built during the reign of The Twenty-four Kings of Nepal, Kalika, Koteshwor Mahadev, Thanimai Temple and many other places of historical and cultural importance have increased the dignity and importance of this place.
Locals say that this place, known as Raginas, later became Rainas. According to history, the lamjung-Rainaskot kingdom, established by Yashobrahma Shah, the youngest son of the first king of the Shah dynasty, Was further strengthened by Narahari Shah, son of Yashobrahma, while Dravya Shah won the race of Chepeghat-Liglig and became the king of Gorkha in 1616 BS.
Situated at an altitude of 1,774 meters above sea level, the picturesque Rainaskot is an important historical site of Nepal. Gurung Museum has also been established in this village with the aim of preserving the art and culture of the locals along with the traditional wandering house to preserve the ancient originality.
Homestays have been operated in 17 houses of Rainaskot in Gurungbasti of Lamjung. Up to 100 people can easily stay here in a night. Shambhu Gurung, manager of Rainaskot Community Homestay, said that the number of tourists visiting here on Friday and Saturday is more than other days.
“On Friday and Saturday, 50 to 100 people come to stay in the homestay. Around 50 to 80 tourists come on other days,” he said. IA manager Gurung said that the guests coming to the homestay are provided with welcome drinks, lunch, locally produced organic food and breakfast as soon as they go. Twenty houses of the same type have been reconstructed here after the devastating earthquake of April 15. Tourism has been promoted along with the operation of homestay in the area, which was rebuilt with the help of Us citizen Natasa, he said.
Mayor of Rainas Municipality Khadga Bahadur Gurung said the municipality was working on a plan to further develop tourism in Rainaskot. “Locally produced food has been encouraged to make the homestay more systematic. We have provided training on homestay operation,” he said.
Mayor Gurung shared that the municipality has given priority to the development of beekeeping, poultry and vegetable farming. A park has also been set up at Rainaskot with the support of the central and state governments. He said that the local government is working in coordination with the central and state governments for the reconstruction of the temple, preservation of archaeological heritage, park and road construction.
Paragliding is also being done from Rainaskot. According to Mayor Gurung, laligunras, kafal and aiselu that bloom in April-April attract tourists more. “Rainas is apt to understand the rural lifestyle. Where you can see the scenes of farming, running a dhiki-jaatto, milking, mohi motheko, etc.”
People from Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara and other cities have been visiting Rainaskot, which can be reached in one and a half hours from Padibazar, the gateway to Lamjung, 155 kilometers away from Kathmandu.
