Kathmandu. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh has stressed the need to control import-oriented economy by increasing the use of domestic products. Speaking at a ‘Cement Conclave’ organised by the Cement Manufacturers Association in Lalitpur today, he opined that increasing domestic production could take the economy in the right direction and reduce imports.

“We have become self-reliant in cement production. Now if you use cement produced in your own country, it will also boost production. It will play an important role in controlling the import-oriented economy. So let’s work keeping these aspects in mind,” said Deputy Prime Minister Singh.

Stating that the use of cement according to the country’s topography would make the roads quality, he said that although the investment was high in the beginning, it would last for a long time, so emphasis should be laid on its use.

Likewise, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal stressed the need for collaboration of the private sector for infrastructure development in Nepal. He said that the government is also studying to develop infrastructure in partnership with the private sector.

Stating that there is a practice in some countries of the world where the private sector invests in infrastructure and also takes certain dividends from it, Minister Dahal said that it was necessary to identify such potential sectors in Nepal as well. He said that concrete road construction could be studied and promoted due to nepal’s geographical uniqueness, progress made in cement production and durability.

Stating that the country is currently in the construction phase, Minister Dahal stressed the need to create an environment for the completion of the projects started within the stipulated time.

Similarly, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Damodar Bhandari said the government was doing necessary work to encourage the use of domestic products. Stating that the presence of the private sector was commendable to become self-reliant in the cement sector, he said that the private sector needed a strong role in domestic production in other sectors as well.

On the occasion, experts said that although cement-sloped roads were expensive initially, they would be effective in the long run due to durability. RSS
