Jhapa. The bridge that was washed away by floods in Biring Khola of Arjundhara municipality two years ago is yet to be constructed. The bridge connecting Birtamod of Jhapa to Mai Municipality of Ilam via Arjundhara is being used for the movement of small vehicles at risk.
Meghraj Ramtel, a local, said the government was not interested in repairing the collapsed bridge immediately. He said, “We were satisfied that there was no budget in the first year, now we are worried that the second year will not be made. ’
The bridge, which is frequented by vehicles in winter, is closed in the rainy season. Locals have demanded that a new concrete bridge should be constructed at the site as the roof of the bridge has collapsed and reached the rivulet. The monsoon floods flow over the bridge.
Arjundhara Municipality’s Information Officer Hemraj Sedhai said the municipality has requested the federal government to manage the budget for the construction of the bridge. Speaker Devraj Ghimire and Minister for Physical Infrastructure Devendra Dahal have shown interest. “They have also seen the condition of the bridge and we hope that the bridge will be constructed in the next year’s budget,” he said. ’
Stating that the municipality does not have enough budget to construct a new bridge, he said it was a compulsion to wait for the federal government. According to him, the bridge will not be repaired as it has become useless due to collapse.
The bridge was constructed in 2065 BS with the assistance of Rs 20 million from the Government of India. With the construction of the bridge, long-distance traffic also started plying on the road.
Information Officer at the Road Division Office, Damak, Bipin Dhungana, said the bridge has not been included in the action plan for the current fiscal year.
