America. A meeting of the US State Congress on Thursday passed a resolution to celebrate May 15 every year as ‘Buddha Day’, saying That Nepal is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha.
Speaker Dustin Burrow tabled a resolution to observe May 15 as ‘Buddha Day’. House of Representatives Dr Suleyman Lalani, Terry Meza, Salman Bhojani, among others, had prepared a resolution on ‘Buddha Day’ and registered it in parliament.
More than 60 Buddhist monks from different countries including Nepal Cultural and Spiritual Center Texas, Nepali Society Texas, Greater Austin Nepali Society, Buddhist Association of Texas, Tamang Society of Texas, Nepal, Vietnam, Colombia and Myanmar were present on the occasion.
The Nepali community in Texas has expressed happiness that the parliament of the state is becoming Nepal-friendly. Nepali-origin lawmakers are not yet represented in the Texas State Parliament. Rajendra Wagle, president of The Nepali Society Texas, said that the state lawmakers have been giving high importance to the proposal related to Nepal.
Texas is a densely populated state with a large Nepali population. People from the Nepali community in Texas have been advocating for a long time to establish the identity of Nepal and Nepalis in Texas. So far, the State Parliament of Texas has passed resolutions related to Nepal Day and Lumbini Day. The resolution to celebrate Buddha Day is the third.
President of Greater Austin Nepal Society, Bidur Khatiwada, said that the proposal to celebrate Buddha Day was an additional success in favor of nepal and the identity of Nepalis.
According to Khatiwada, may 15 every year will be celebrated as Buddha Day as the Texas Rajya Sabha has passed a resolution accepting that Lumbini of Nepal is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha.
